GALLERY HOUSE

This family home is located on a property with magnificent view of Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Adams. The house is broken into a series of volumes divided by program, and organized on axises in both directions. By creating open corridors, light and air is introduced into the home, and views are directed towards quiet courtyard spaces, a contrast to the drama experienced by the east-facing windows towards the mountains.

This house embraces concepts found in Japanese architecture such as simplicity, expression of natural materials, connection to nature. It also integrates some traditional features such as a genkan (a place to remove shoes, which is a step down from the floor level), and an engawa (a covered outdoor deck to enjoy nature), and a Japanese style bathing room with a soaking tub and separate shower.
